TWO men who appeared in the Nadi Magistrates Court yesterday for allegedly aiding and harbouring escapee Dinesh Deshwar Dutt were refused bail.

Yogesh Prasad is charged with harbouring a prisoner at large and giving false information to a public servant.

Abhinesh Singh is charged with harbouring a prisoner at large.

The duo appeared before magistrate Siromi Dokonivalu Turaga yesterday afternoon.

The charges were read out and explained to the two accused persons and their lawyers asked the court for the plea to be deferred.

Mr Singh, a businessman operating his own rental car business out of Sonaisali, is alleged to have provided a vehicle for Dutt to move around in the Western Division.

Mr Prasad is alleged to have harboured Dutt for a week.

The court heard that he lied about not harbouring Dutt when initially questioned.

The court heard that Mr Prasad's wife reported the matter to police.

Mr Singh was represented by counsels Babu Singh and Repeka Varasikete.

Mr Prasad was represented by Nadi lawyer Aminiasi Turuva.

Mr Singh's counsels applied for bail saying he needs to be hands on with his business and he has three children to support.

Mr Prasad's counsel applied for bail on the grounds that he had a heart condition.

The court heard claims by Mr Prasad that he was assaulted by police and refused a medical check-up when requested.

Divisional prosecuting officer Western Assistant Superintendent of Police Anil Prasad objected to the applications, on the grounds that Mr Singh could interfere with a State witness. He told the court that Mr Singh assaulted a State witness while in police custody.

He also told the court that Mr Prasad could harm his wife who was a State witness.

Mr Turaga refused bail to the two accused persons and remanded them in custody.

The two accused will appear in the Nadi Magistrates Court on January 17 for mention.
