Ban on coral trade

GOVERNMENT has imposed a ban on the harvesting, export or sale of live coral and aquarium rocks.

The ban, which came into effect on December 28, 2017 was a directive from the Ministry of Fisheries.

In a public notice, the ministry stated that all companies involved in this trade were to take note of the ban.

"All companies harvesting, purchasing, and sales of live rocks and live coral are now banned and no export permits would be processed by the ministry," the notice stated.

"The Convention in International Trade for Endangered Species (CITES) scientific committee will be submitting to the management authority on January 7, 2018 that live coral and live rock is given a zero quota for 2018.

"The Ministry of Fisheries and the Fiji CITES would support the development of sustainable options or the development of farmed or cultured coral."

The notice was signed by the ministry's permanent secretary Sanaila Naqali. This year the ministry also banned the trade of bech-de-mer.

Efforts to contact Minister for Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau proved futile.
