FIJI has been ranked as the happiest country in the globe.

The country topped the happiness index in the global end-of-year survey on hope, optimism and happiness.

The 2017 survey was conducted in 55 countries with a total sample of 53,769 persons.

Only two Pacific Island countries — Fiji and Papua New Guinea - were included in the survey.

In both Fiji and PNG, 1000 people were surveyed nationally aged 18 years and over, covering both urban and rural areas.

Respondents were asked: "In general, do you personally feel very happy, happy, neither happy nor unhappy, unhappy or very unhappy about your life?

In Fiji, 94 per cent said they were happy or very happy, 2 per cent were unhappy or very unhappy and 4 per cent were neither happy nor unhappy.

When the percentage of those who are unhappy is subtracted from the percentage of those who are happy, Fiji polled a happiness index of 92 per cent which was the highest of all countries surveyed in 2017.

Other happy countries in the world after Fiji include Colombia (87 per cent), Philippines (84 per cent), Mexico (82 per cent), Vietnam (77 per cent), Kazakhstan (74 per cent), Papua New Guinea (74 per cent), Indonesia (68 per cent), India (64 per cent) Argentina (64 per cent) and the Netherlands (64 per cent).

Net happiness across the 55 countries polled by the survey was 15 per cent points higher among the young (under 34 years of age) than among the older population (above 55 years of age).

The survey also noted that 2017 was a tough year for the world with terrorist attacks almost each week, influencing people's lives all around the world.

Iran, Iraq and Ukraine topped the unhappiest list with single digit happiness indexes of five, seven and eight respectively.

The survey was initiated Dr George Gallup in 1977 and has been conducted on a global basis every year since then.

Dr Gallup was an American pioneer of survey sampling techniques and inventor of the famous Gallup Poll.

Tebbutt Research conducted the survey in Fiji and Papua New Guinea — it is conducted by member companies of GIA (Gallup International) in partnership with members of WIN (World Independent Network).
