'No pay rise'

THE general secretary of the Fiji Teachers Union, Agni Deo Singh has hit back at the Attorney-General and Minister for Education, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, for saying teachers have had a "record pay rise".

Mr Singh, when referring to an article published in The Fiji Times on December 14, said it was wrong of the Mr Sayed-Khaiyum to say that teachers had a pay rise when that was not the case.

The article stated Mr Sayed-Khaiyum expected an improvement in performance from school heads in return for the pay rise

"The salary rise that has been given to the heads of school is a result of a job evaluation exercise that was carried by external assessors and the jobs of the heads of schools had been evaluated at that level and it is actually not a salary rise as far as the union is concerned, it is paying them the current salary now," Mr Singh said.

"The job evaluation exercise revealed that they should have been on this salary for the job that they are doing and they were underpaid for this role.

"To say that they have been given a record pay rise is not actually correct. From our point of view, they are being paid the correct salary."

Mr Singh said the responsibilities of school heads continued into the holidays as they had to look into the receiving and dissemination of results, planning for the new year and school maintenance concurrently.
