Probe into inmate's escape

Mere Naleba
Sunday, December 17, 2017

A CORRECTIONS officer is being investigated after the convicted inmate he was escorting escaped from the Nadi Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon.

Deputy Commissioner of Fiji Corrections Service Joe Kulinidilo confirmed Deshwar Dinesh Dutt was on the run as initial reports from police confirmed a compromise of security escorting duties.

"The police are now handling this matter to ascertain whether this person (escorting officer) will be charged and presented in court," Mr Kulinidilo said.

Dutt was also serving time in 2014 when he escaped from custody and was later recaptured in August of the same year.

In April 2015, he was sentenced to one year six months by High Court judge Justice Salesi Temo after being convicted of receiving stolen property.

He was co-charged with several others in a $70,000 BSP robbery in Suva.

Police are pleading with anyone who has information on his whereabouts to call Crime Stoppers on 919.
