Raj stands firm

GEORGE Shiu Raj believes listening to the Opposition and accommodating their views is fundamental in any democratic state.

Having recently been selected as a SODELPA candidate, the former parliamentarian hopes the views of society was given more attention.

Mr Raj said he hoped to be able to provide people that platform by running for election again.

"The seat in Parliament does not belong to you," he said.

"It's a public chair, it's a chair of the people and when government gives you a ministry to look after, you must ensure you work in the right way.

"You must also ensure that you respect the civil servants.

"You need to hear from the community because democracy is about listening to people."

He added despite receiving offers to join other parties, SODELPA remained his party of choice.

"SODELPA is my party. I am a man of principle and when you belong to an existing party, you stick to it.

"There were a lot of approaches coming from other parties but I told them I am a man of principle.

"I am a son of Ra and I will stick to my party."

He added he had done great work in his time as a cabinet minister, enabling the multi-ethnic affairs scholarships and also increasing assistance for those under the social welfare schemes.

"I love politics. I am a big businessman. I always believe in democracy and I believe in people's approach and people's vision and that is what should guide us."
