A mother's love

Serafina Silaitoga

HER wrinkled hands trembled beneath the belly folds of her disabled and bedridden son, but 78-year-old Valavia Ranadi showed no sign of weariness.

It's her love for Agapito Muawalu (son), 50, that has been her strength since 1975, when an accident at Labasa Town caused his disability.

And for this Christmas, although there's not much money to spend on food, Ms Ranadi said they were content with what God would provide for them at their house in Soasoa, outside Labasa.

Even if she could not afford to buy a fruitcake, she said her love for Agapito was sufficient for their Christmas.

"It's not easy looking after my son as he is big and heavy and I have to move him around the room to bathe him and feed him," she said.

"But I know this Christmas, God will provide for us and he has always done that.

"My husband died more than 10 years ago, but I have always been a single mother all my life looking after my son since he was seven years old." Her love for Agapito, she said, had played a vital part in her life as a mother.

"When he was younger and lighter, no one has ever helped me carry my son to the bathroom or to the toilet and I did that by myself," she said.

"It's actually my love for him that renews my strength every day to look after him and care for him to the best of my ability as a mother.

"And I thank only God for helping us over the past years."

Agapito was a Class Two student of Holy Family Primary School when the accident which led to his disability happened.
