FORMER Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) CEO Opetaia Ravai and his spokesperson remained silent about yesterday's shocking announcement that he was relieved of his duties.

When contacted yesterday, Mr Ravai referred queries to a mysterious "representative" for comments regarding the discontinuation of his contract.

In a phone interview, the mysterious "representative" preferred anonymity, saying he was not at liberty to make any comments regarding Mr Ravai until the next 48hours.

Yesterday, WAF chairperson PL Munasinghe confirmed they had started the process to recruit a new CEO with a strong engineering and technical background in water and waste water management to oversee major projects scheduled to begin early next year, including the $F839 million Greater Suva Area Water and Waste Water Scheme.

Mr Munasinghe confirmed Mr Ravai's contract had been discontinued.

"While we thank Mr Ravai for his excellent work over the past five years, it is time to position the authority to meet the engineering and technical challenges ahead," he said.

"WAF is entering a new era that is becoming highly technical and we need a person with extensive hands-on experience in water and waste water project development to lead the authority."

Mr Munasinghe said the new CEO would be named soon.
