AARON Powell proved everyone wrong when he helped his 4x100 metres relay team win gold in the final at the Korman Stadium in Port Vila, Vanuatu yesterday.

Fiji 4x100m team consisting of Sireli Bulivorovoro, Tony Lemeki, Kolinio Radrudru and Powell worked hard from the start of the race to win gold.

However, it was Powell's powerful finish against Papua New Guinea's Kupun Wisil which saw the Fiji team take first place. Powell had taken the lead after the final baton change and managed to hold on despite a strong challenge from Wisil.

"It feels good to win," he said after the race.

"I thank the Almighty God for guiding the team to the finish line and giving me the talent to showcase."

Powell was disqualified from the 100m men's race despite running the race when race officials claimed he made a break. I was confident of a win despite what had happened in the 100m race," he added.

"I will now prepare for the 200 metres final tomorrow (today)."

Meanwhile, Papua New Guinea took silver while hosts Vanuatu settled for a bronze in the race.
