LTA amendments effective next month

AMMENDMENTS to the Land Transport Authority policies regarding taxi permits will be effective from January 1, 2018.

LTA board chairperson Vijay Maharaj said nothing had changed, even with the departure of the former CEO Carmine Piantedosi, who resigned last month.

"These changes come into effect from January 1, 2018 and it still stands and will apply as changed," he said.

He did not comment further on the issue.

However, the changes included the conditions of taxi permits, in which households earning less than $20,000 annually could apply.

The maximum salary of $20,000 would be a combined total of all household members.

However, the LTA clarified in an earlier public consultation in Labasa that applications for taxi permits made before or in 2011 will be processed next month.

The LTA had stated that issuing of permits for these applications were shelved after Government's decision to stop issuing taxi permits from 2011.

Another change made in the legislation was that people could not apply for taxi permits, as previously done.

The LTA would need to advertise the need for taxis in certain areas around the country and the required number of permits.

LTA sated when this is advertised, interested applicants could then apply and they still needed to earn less than $20,000 as per condition.
