"I DEDICATE my award to my mum and I really wish she was here," said Arylic Singh, the recipient of the Dean's Honour Award at the Fiji National University's graduation ceremony at the Vodafone Arena in Suva yesterday.

Mr Singh was among the 608 graduates of the university's College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences.

Mr Singh said his mother died when he was in high school and said it was one of the major challenges he faced during the course of his studies to become a doctor

"Education wise was not a problem, but the things that surround education, which is family, I was away from home for a long time and I was staying on campus and sometimes for a whole year," he said.

Mr Singh is from Nabilo settlement in Korovou, Tailevu.

"Other problem, the financial support we had a sort of financial downturn. Other than that, we had strong support, my uncle is the most influential person in my studies and he was the one who really supported me."

Mr Singh was honoured with a special award in anaesthesia, which was recognised by the Australian and New Zealand society of anaesthesia. He said being the first doctor from his settlement was a proud moment for his family, which consisted of his uncle, brother and father.

"Becoming a doctor is one step to giving back to my community, obviously, I want to go back and start working as a medical officer in my community and be there for my community and people will be more open and willing to come to me," he said.

Mr Singh said he always aspired to be a doctor and enrolled at the Fiji National University in the year 2012. Mr Singh has not stopped dreaming as his next step is to become either a neurosurgeon or an anaesthetist.

His ambition to become a neurosurgeon came from Ben Carson's book The Gifted Hands.

"It was my motivation to become a neurosurgeon and so that is what I will pursue further," Mr Singh said.
