Retired police officers make submissions

A BOARD of inquiry could be set up to look into the unpaid monies to retired police officers who were part of the Job Evaluation Exercise (JEE) in 2004.

Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence, Netani Rika said the issue was something that needed to be looked into and solved.

He made the comment after submissions by four retired police officers to the committee yesterday who claimed they still had not received their full pay as part of that JEE.

"This is not going to end, this is one of the petitions that we need to look at. It can boil down to setting up a board of inquiry," Mr Rika said.

The officers, in their submissions, said the JEE was for officers serving in the Fiji Police Force in 2004 and not for those who came in between 2005 to 2013. The officers also claimed the JEE payment had been unfair to them.

"The sad part was that majority of us who were supposed to be paid by this JEE have been overlooked and neglected and those who joined from 2005 onwards are not eligible for this but reaping more than us who were in the force from 2004," former police officer Kitione Kulavere said.

Opposition Member Aseri Radrodro told the retirees yesterday the onus was on the Fiji Police Force to conduct the right calculations to pay out the right amount in agreement with what was paid out to police officers in 2004.

Meanwhile, police chief admin officer Assistant Commissioner of Police Intendra Nair earlier confirmed the payout was made in five phases, starting from 2004 with the last payout done in 2012.

He also said the pay increment amounted to $28.6 million.
