Burst sewer angers fishermen

THE Lautoka Fishermen's Association is pleading with authorities to fix the sewerage system at the Lautoka Fisheries Wharf because it was affecting the sale of their catch.

Association president Semi Radravu said the sewer problem was a constant one.

"Every month or two we have sewer overflowing on to the footpath," he said.

"It gives a foul smell and we try our best to clean it up but it's a recurrent problem that needs structural changes.

"There are times when fishermen have to sell their catch on the footpath outside, but there too they can't escape the spill.

'We've been asking for this for a long time. It's not just for us, it's for the customers as well. It's unhygienic and poses a health risk."

Ministry of Fisheries permanent secretary, Sanaila Naqali said they were aware of the issue and were liaising with the Ministry of Health to address it .

"The outlet is affected on a regular basis by the waves which blocks it, because the fish market sewage outlet is beside the sea," he said. "The Ministry of Health is aware of the issue and they will work on further modifications. I am aware that they had worked on it previously."
