To'omalatai: I wish my dad was here, I really miss him

MATAUAINA Gwendolyn To'omalatai could not hold back her tears when asked how she was feeling one day after being crowned Miss Pacific Islands 2017.

"I wish my dad was here, I really miss him," the 24-year-old said.

Her father passed away in September this year shortly after the nursing student was crowned Miss American Samoa.

"He was my inspiration and if it wasn't for him and for the blessings of our Heavenly Father I wouldn't be where I am today."

Ms To'omalatai, a student at Kapi'olani Community College in Hawaii, said she would spend the remainder of her reign being a good ambassador for American Samoa and the Pacific.

"Right now, I can't wait to get home and see my mum and brothers and sisters.

"Their support has meant the world to me. But I also want to thank Fiji for being such wonderful hosts and a big vinaka vakalevu to all the people who came out to Prince Charles Park in Nadi every night and to the wonderful people who hosted us to breakfast, lunch and dinner — you are my bigger Pacific family and I love you all."

Miss Fiji Hally Qaqa won the second runner-up title and Miss Samoa Alexandra Iakopo claimed the first runner-up prize.
