Fiji to host FAO in April

Friday, December 08, 2017

Update: 12:07PM YET another international conference comes to Fiji when the Food and Agriculture Organisation, and agency of the United Nations holds its 34th annual regional conference in Fiji next April.

This according to a statement from the government this hour confirms that Fiji will become the first Pacific island country to host the FAO conference for Asia and the Pacific (APRC).

The 34th FAO Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific will be held in Nadi from 9 to 13 April 2018, to be attended by 46 FAO member nations in the Asia and Pacific region.

The last such regional conference was held in Putrajaya, Malaysia in March 2016.

Minister for Agriculture, Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management & Meteorological Services Inia Seruiratu this week signed a Memorandum of Responsibilities (MoR) with the FAO's assistant director-general cementing plans.

At the signing ceremony, Mr Seruiratu said the FAO APRC would be an opportunity to show off Fiji's facilities.

"Fiji supports FAO's mandate and looks forward to a greater contribution from FAO to the challenges facing Fiji and the Pacific in addressing food and nutrition security," he said.

FAO hosts regional conferences where ministers of agriculture and high-level officials meet to examine challenges and priority in the food and agriculture sector.

The goal is to promote "regional coherence on global policies and political issues," the FAO website said.

The final communique from the 33rd FAO APRC called on the FAO "to move forward with regional efforts to eradicate hunger, malnutrition and counter threats to agriculture from climate change by 2030."

"The Conference also stressed the need to revitalize the image of the agriculture sector in general in order for it to be considered an important career choice for young people," the FAO said.
