Baber maps 7s plan

FIJI Airways 7s coach Gareth Baber has a few tricks up his sleeves to surprise their opponents in this weekend's Cape Town 7s.

Having bowed out in the semi-final of the Dubai 7s, Baber has mapped out a strategy to counter their opponents.

"We will look at each game individually and plan our game strategy," said Baber.

"I want to continue to progress our shape and systems in attack and gain the advantages of having the balance of our stepping players and ball carriers.

"This will enable us to disrupt the defense and create space to utilise.

"The opposite is true when we do not have the ball and we need to work harder on ensuring our system enables accurate tackles.

"We will always have three tough teams in our pool and that is why it is called the World Series."

Baber pointed out the miss tackles, poor defense and indiscipline as the major contributing factors in last week's Dubai 7s semi-final loss to South Africa.

He said the side had been working on their mistakes with the aim of improving from where they left off in Dubai.

"We will need to improve defensively in this next tournament and this has been a big focus of our training this week. This was very evident when we played in games where we scored a number of tries ourselves. Being solid defensively is what will win us competitions. We know that we can score from anywhere at any time but we also need to create pressure in the game in other ways."

Baber said Waisea Nacuqu had been ruled out of the tournament and there would be no 13th player to cover up for injuries this weekend.

"The replacement for Nacugu is Amenoni Nasilasila.

"We travelled with 13 players and when we lost Waisea, Noni went in to replace him. I believe that Noni played well last week and was one of the most effective tacklers. I will be looking for the same again," he added.

Fiji is pooled with Samoa, Wales and Canada.
