North boxing revival

THE much anticipated Canadian Fiji Southern Boxing Promotion is expected to unearth some new talents on Vanua Levu.

And calls have been made to host more sporting tournaments to expose the many untapped talents in the North.

Vanua Levu boxers, trainers and former boxers have welcomed the idea of staging the boxing promotion in the North.

Boxer Tevita Sete said many world-class athletes started their sporting career on Vanu Levu.

He said the only contributing factor in the North was the lack of sporting tournaments.

Sete and his brother Lekima Tuiviwa will represent the North in the Vanua Levu and Viti Levu boxing battle oragnised by Canada Fiji Southern Boxing program.

"We hardly have big sporting events in the North and we are thankful to the promoter for bringing top-class boxing battles," said Sete.

"This program which is known as the battle of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu boxers will be one of the best programs this year.

"We have many talented boxers here in the North but they lacked exposure.

"We are thankful to promoter Simon Naushad and the Boxing Commission of Fiji for hosting a program here.

"We also look forward to have more fights in the North in the future."

Vunivau Boxing Club trainer Joseph Naicker echoed similar sentiments saying the promotion would be a good opportunity for Vanu Levu boxers to showcase their talents.

"We have many good fighters, but we lacked the exposure," he said.

"Boxers have been urged to make good use of this opportunity."

Five boxers from the club will feature in the program.

Meanwhile, the main bout between Fiji Boxing wonder boy Siliveni Nawai and former South Pacific Games gold medallist Osea Nakanacagi is expected to be a thriller.

Nawai who won on points in their last fight will try to maintain his unbeaten run while Nakanacagi on the other hand will be out to avenge his loss.

Fiji's middleweight champion Abhay Chand will face Ulaiyasi Qalomai in the main supporting bout while Ba's Savenaca Naliva to face Vitori Natawake in the extra supporting bout.

The program will be held at Subrail Park on December 16.
