Netball support

THE Grasshoppers netball team has teamed up with the Queensland Firebirds and has secured the services of upcoming Australian netball player Mahalia Cassidy as the Festival Ambassador of 2017 Grasshoppers Invitational Netball Festival in Suva.

The four-day tournament starts in Suva this morning.

Last year's tournament had Australian Diamond's Gretel Tippet as its Festival Ambassador.

Tournament founder Alumeci Sachs said they were hoping for another successful round of competition among participating teams.

Sachs also thanked their sponsors for coming on board to support the event again this year.

"The Grasshoppers Netball family are truly grateful and fortunate to have such notable sponsors on board again this year to support our netball development initiatives, in particular our Grasshoppers Invitational Netball Festival," she said.

"We must acknowledge Tourism Fiji, GPH, BSP, Colgate Palmolive, The Fiji Times, Pacific Destinationz, Sportsworld, Fiji Sports Council, Fiji Arts Council, Coca-Cola Amatil and Fiji Water. Others are still coming on board. This has brought the overall cost of the weekend of festive netball down to an acceptable registration fee for our young girls, with a better provincial representation and a focus on cultural exchange."

Sachs said they had spent a considerable time and resource in rebuilding their annual programs and festival partners with a new theme to share and display their social and cultural backgrounds.

"This will attract more competitive local as well as overseas teams in the future and will provide a higher standard of netball than we had from the overseas teams in the past. It will also assist our national primary and secondary school teams prepare for overseas tours and competition. After a full year of studies, our young girls deserve a treat to kick off their Christmas holidays and we aim to provide them the best weekend of fun, competitive and festive netball," she said.
