Interest soars

THE desire to know how to play perfect rugby continues to grow among young Fijian men.

And since the start of the Fiji Rugby Academy at Davuilevu, Nausori by former Flying Fijian, Seremaia Bai in the past two years, the interest has soared to new heights.

The former international fly-half, in the current school holidays, conducted coaching clinics in parts of the West last week and this week in Suva at the University of the South Pacific grounds.

"This week we have 65 boys from the age of 10 to 23 and some club coaches as far as Vanua Levu," Bai said.

"Parents support in allowing their children to learn rugby is overwhelming. We have boys who came in express buses from the West in the morning, attend the clinics and return. We have two boys sent by their parents from Lakeba in Lau, a New Zealand-based player, and a Fijian of Indian descent. Parents are calling in and it's hard for us to say no."

Bai's effort to motivate young ruggers received a boost this week with Auckland under-19 rugby assistant coach Sam Ward helping in the clinic.

"The interest in our young men is growing and the whole of Fiji should help."

The morning drizzle at Laucala Bay yesterday failed to dampen the spirits of the young men as Bai and Auckland under-19 rugby coach Sam taught rugby basics skills such as ball into contact which dealt with the correct way of carrying and protecting the ball in attack and defence, and pre-contact and post-contact which deal with what a player should do before and after coming into contact with the opposition.

Yesterday's session ended with Ward teaching participants how to construct their own profiles which would be useful when trying to win overseas contracts.

The clinic continues at the USP grounds from 9am to 11am today.
