New dam brings joy

ABOUT 230 people in Navilawa Village are celebrating the completion of a dam and reservoir which will bring clean and consistent water supply to 45 households in the Ba community.

Village headman Ilaitia Botitu said the grog-farming community had faced its share of struggles because of issues with water supply for years.

"We have experienced no water in the village for a long time because wild pigs damaged our water source and caused the water to become dirty and to dry up," the 50-year-old shared.

"When dirty water would come out of the pipe, it caused many diseases in our village."

He added that villagers were forced to source drinking water from a nearby creek. But because of health and other risks, they sought help from Government.

A three-month long Water Authority of Fiji project with the aid of villagers resulted in the laying of two kilometres of pipes, installation of 54 stand pipes and construction of the dam and reservoir at a total cost of $77,886.

The Health Inspector Nadi has surveyed the project and declared it clean and safe to use.
