Man behind bars

Friday, December 08, 2017

THE High Court will not tolerate the abuse of children and will continue to pass longer prison sentences on those who are guilty of such offences.

Justice Salesi Temo made the comment yesterday while sentencing a former teacher to 14 years in prison for raping and sexually assaulting nine female students.

The man was sentenced to 14 years for the rape charges and three years for the sexual assault charges by the High Court in Suva. Both sentences are to be served concurrently.

The incidents took place between January 1, 2010 and October 31, 2013, while he was a teacher.

Justice Temo said the aggravating factor in this case was the serious breach of trust. He said parents of this country entrusted their parental responsibility to teachers when their children were sent to school. He said 99 per cent of teachers did their best in school while other teachers such as the accused did the unthinkable.

Justice Temo said the accused should not complain if his liberty was taken away from him.

The 35-year-old former teacher was convicted of four counts of rape and nine counts of sexual assault.

He will be eligible for parole after serving 13 years in prison.
