Leader empowers youths

NAYARABALE youth leader Iliesa Vakaruru has encouraged youths to take the first step and make use of their natural resources.

Mr Vakaruru said this while speaking to youths during the national training for members of the Methodist Youth Fellowship at Subrail Park in Labasa yesterday.

"One major issue that youths face nowadays is the lack of employment or job opportunities," he said.

He said youths needed to take the first step and help create employment for themselves.

"We have a lot of land that we can use for farming cash crops and vegetables and at the same time sell them to the markets and earn money," he said. "One good example is our youth group up in Nayarabale Village in the district of Vaturova in Cakaudrove, where we have invested about $3.3 million into our bank account."

Mr Vakaruru said they had 45 members in their group and all benefited from their farm. "We have a timetable that we follow every day and we have seen that we have grown from strength to strength and our members have earned a living just by working in the farm," he said.

"We now have 1000 yasi plants in our farm, 1000 pineapple, a yaqona farm, dalo farm and we have even bought our own vehicle as well."

Mr Vakaruru challenged youths, saying they could still earn money even if they did not have a job.

"We can all be successful in everything we do but all we need is to take the first step," he said.

"For all youths who are sitting here today, I encourage all of you to start small and dream big, create your own employment and come out successful but keep in mind that you always have to honour God in everything you do."
