$32m for housing project

THE residential development project in Davuilevu, Nausori, is expected to cost the Government $32 million, says Minister for Housing and Environment, Parveen Kumar.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the project yesterday, Mr Kumar referred to the commitment and efforts of the Government to enable low and middle income earners to be homeowners.

"It is another milestone for our Government in efforts to providing reasonable housing to low and middle-income earning families," Mr Kumar said.

The residential project will have 754 lots of which 301 lots are expected to be completed by August next year, while the remaining lots will be completed by September 2019.

According to Mr Kumar, the project will have all basic infrastructure such as sewerage, water, electricity, roads, driveways, footpath and kerb and channel.

The minister also sent out a warning to politicians who were relaying false information to landowners.

Mr Kumar claimed he had been approached by a group of people claiming that politicians had been visiting their settlement with landowners.

"I was really disturbed this morning when a group of people came to me and said that there are some politicians who went to their squatter areas with some landowners giving all the wrong information on squatter developments within the Nausori-Suva corridor," he said.

"In that particular area, there are about 360 houses, what we see today (yesterday), the partnership between Government and Methodist Church in Fiji should be an example."

Mr Kumar sent out a warning to those politicians and pleaded with them to not mislead landowners because the Government had to build their relationship, which took four to five years.

"Do not disturb this arrangement, with this arrangement, everybody will benefit, the landowners, tenant, landlord and country as a whole," he said.
