FIJI football team is still in the contention to win a gold medal in the Pacific Mini Games after they played to a nil-all draw against Solomon Islands at Korman Stadium in Port Vila, Vanuatu last night.

Both the sides created scoring chances, but failed to find the back of net in the match.

Fiji had the services of Setareki Hughes, Napolioni Qasevakatini, Simione Tamanisau and stylish midfielder Christopher Wasasala in the match.

Solomon Islands strike force led by Benjamin Totori created some chances, but they were denied by the Fijian defenders.

Both the teams have four points each after a win and a draw in the competition.

Gamel said he would make changes to the team before they take on Vanuatu in the third match of the competition.

"Solomon Islands are a quality side and we tried to block them and played defensively to stop them from scoring goals," Gamel said.

"Solomon Islands were also surprised to see that we can also manage the possession though we lacked in midfield and the players who created the moves from the midfield could not finish with a goal. There was not enough combination in the team which gave us a bit of trouble.

"We are still in the race for the medal and we will make changes in the team and there are a few players who would be changed in our next match."

Gamel said the players were slowly adapting to the new style of European football.

"At times we created danger for Solomon Islands by playing the modern football and we still have problems though as we lost some balls while playing it in front," he said.
