'Fiji leads the way'

FIJIAN athletes always represent Fiji with pride and passion despite the challenges on their way, says Fiji's Minister for Youth and Sports, Laisenia Tuitubou.

He is in Port Vila, Vanuatu, to attend a meeting and joined the Fijian team in watching weight-lifter Manueli Tulo won a gold medal on Tuesday.

"Athletes give a lot to the country and our weight-lifters did a good job in the competition and I also came to see them compete," he said.

"With good governance and policy launched by Government, there are many good results and two sporting bodies that have won awards are Karate Fiji and Athletics Fiji.

"If any sport had corruption organisation, we will see the sport going down. The Government supports, but not dictate because of international federations and policies."

He attended a meeting on Monday with regional counterparts.

He said Fiji was on top in comparison with other countries in terms of policy-related matters.

"I came for a meeting where all the ministers came together to discuss sporting policies and how we are going on with anti-doping policies.

"We were very fortunate that Fiji followed FASANOC and Oceania National Olympic Committee and we are in front of everyone in the South Pacific when it comes to policies.

"We will be allowing the public and the sporting bodies to come up with critics.

"We gave them one year, so by 2018, we will present in Parliament and it is going to be our new policy.

"We are more advanced than the other countries in the Oceania because I presented the policies to them," Tuitubou said.
