SHANGRI-LA'S Fijian Resort and Spa played host to the nine Miss South Pacific Pageant contestants and their chaperones this week and treated them to a Fish House Building activity and lunch.

The contestants from nine Pacific Island countries also went on a resort tour, including a visit to the Shangri-La's Marine Education Centre (SMEC).

"The visit to our marine education centre has been part of our ongoing work in raising awareness on the importance of conserving our marine resources and we are delighted that we were able to share some of our work with these young women," said corporate social responsibility manager Mereoni Mataika.

"It is so timely and so relevant as we are all from small island oceanic states advocating for our marine and terrestrial resources and these young women were grateful to learn about as well as participate in our programmes, she said.

"To date we have seen around 50,000 visitors come through our marine education centre and part of our work includes mangrove restoration work with both our guests and other stakeholders especially our local students.

"Through this and other programs such as our Heritage in Young Hands project in partnership with the National Trust for Fiji Islands we hope that we will be able to effect change both now and into the future."

The group made two fish houses, which will be placed on the reef flats surrounding the resort in one of two fish house villages shaped like a star fish.

The contestants were also presented with certificates of participation that includes a GPS tracking number to help track their fish house on Google maps.
