Bid to combat counterfeit trade, piracy

REGIONAL Customs officers are being geared towards best practices, experiences, methods and approaches to combating counterfeiting and piracy in their respective countries.

And with the problem occurring more frequently on a global scale, customs representatives from Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) are undergoing a weeklong training by experts from World Customs Organization (WCO) and China Customs.

The training — WCO sub-regional workshop for Oceanian members on combating counterfeiting and piracy — not only focuses on combating counterfeiting and piracy but also on improving networking and encouraging the exchange of information.

FRCS chief executive officer Visvanath Das said with the high level exploitation by counterfeiters, enhancement of intellectual property right knowledge was crucial.

"We all will agree that rapid economic, technological and social changes have brought an unprecedented era of beneficent international trade, migration and communication throughout the world," Mr Das said in a statement.

"But such changes have also produced a much more sinister by-product in the form of international crime, terrorism, arms trafficking, counterfeiting and piracy."

Mr Das said criminals were also taking advantage of globalisation and loose border arrangements to disguise the scale and locations of their operations.

The training is being facilitated by WCO intellectual property right, health and safety program technical expert Sandra Wens and China Customs' Tong Hua from China Customs Cooperation Fund (CCF).

The workshop concludes on Friday.
