Pre-packed raw sugar earns miller $657k

PRE-PACKED raw sugar manufactured at the Fiji Sugar Corporation's Packaging Plant in Lautoka earned the miller about $657,000 this year.

In its 2017 Annual Report, FSC chief executive officer Graham Clark said establishing the plant had been a successful venture in terms of sales to the local and regional market.

He said the packaging plant came into operation after the Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission approved the price of 1kg, 2kg and 4kg sugar on February 28and it came into effect from March 3, 2017.

Mr Clark said the approved price was $1.53 VIP/kg.

"The sale of retail packs sugar on the domestic market commenced in March.

"Punjas was also nominated to sell retail pack sugar in all the Pacific Islands.

"A total of 336.9 tonnes of retail pack sugar was sold locally during the financial year at a value of $521,126.32 VIP and a total of 118.8 tonnes of retail pack sugar was sold in the Pacific Island at a value of $135,792 FOB."

The packaging plant was built in 2015 at a cost of $2 million. It obtained its business licence in September, 2016 and came into operation on February 28 this year.
