World Rugby looks at Fiji's bid to host

WORLD Rugby has confirmed Fiji's bid to hosting a leg in the World Sevens Series will be carefully scrutinised to ensure the country has the capability and potential to host an international tournament as such.

Douglas Langley, the World Rugby Sevens Series director, said there were certain criteria that would need to be met before Fiji was given the green light.

Langley said with the tender opened for the 2020-2023 cycle, Fiji would be part of the process of evaluation before the announcement was made in June.

"Fiji has made it public that they are interested in bidding for the 2020-2023 cycle, of course they are part of the process now and they will be evaluated together with all the other bids," Langley said.

"Now why they were not part of this series, I cannot really answer that because that was before my time, so I was not part of any process that might have gotten on before.

"Fiji now will be looked at freshly and compared objectively across the other bids and know we hope to see a good bid and really hope to see how they can progress as a tournament on the series."

Langley said there was a lot that needed to be considered before a nation could be given permission to host a tournament.

"The main kind of criteria would be linked to a bit of a commercial model and because there is a commercial part of the tournament that needs to be balanced out with the rugby sides, obviously we need to look at team services, we need to look at hosting so many teams, hosting so many support staff, hosting so many spectators not only from Fiji but from around the world.

"Obviously we are looking at the crowd, the spectator numbers and how we can engage the tournament globally and how we can engage it with the main tournament series sponsors. So those are the kind of things we are looking at to hosting a world-class tournament."

When asked how much it will cost to host a successful international tournament he said;

"I cannot put a dollar value to hosting a successful tournament because that varies, that vary from country to country because the value of the economy, what things costs, what some hosts have to hire themselves, what some host have at hand because it's part of their union, so it's a difficult question to ask."
