North schools battle

COMPETITION is expected to be tough for primary schools in the 11 districts within the Cakaudrove, Macuata and Bua provinces participating in this year's Northern FMF Chow Games.

Games organising committee president Sisilia Cokanauto said at the end of competition yesterday medals had been evenly shared among teams.

Cokanauto said the domination by the top schools in the town areas had been broken this year.

"This is a good sign because it shows that schools in rural areas are also performing up to par as schools in urban areas," he said.

"This year we have nine teams from primary schools in the 11 districts and this is the second year for the divisional meets.

"After next year the games will be moved to Viti Levu for the national championships where a team representing the North will be chosen from the crèam of the crop in the competitions during the previous three years."

Cokanauto said teachers from secondary schools in the North had also been at the games venue yesterday and also today to scout for athletes for the secondary school competitions.

"We are aware that there are scouts out here looking for athletes they will enrol in their schools next year," she said.

"With the level of competition today (yesterday) we are expecting the defending champions Labasa 1 to have tough competition to defend their titles.

"Funds raised this year will be given to the district teams to prepare their teams for next year's games. We are calling on members of the public to come in numbers and support their teams with the gate fees for adults at $3 while the secondary school students at $2, primary students in uniform 50 cents and those without uniform at $1."

About 730 athletes are part of the two-day event at Subrail Park in Labasa.
