Mana resort to close for film production

MANA Island Resort and Spa will close for about five months next year as part of a resort buyout by an overseas film production company.

The resort is believed to have a three-year contract with TV show Survivor and according to Mana Island general manager Patrick Wong, the buyout marks the end of another successful year for the resort.

"This buyout is for next year and the following year as well, so it is certainly great for Fiji," he said.

"You know the Government of the day is pushing very hard to encourage investors from the film industry into having locations in Fiji and there are great incentives available.

"It spins the benefits not just in the main tourism belts but to the rural parts of Fiji and the local community too."

He said the year had been a good one for Mana with the buyouts and the increasing number of visitors from traditional markets Australia and New Zealand.

"It's certainly come down to our quiet season after Christmas and New Year and then we are coming into the buyouts with a film production for about five months, which they've bought out the resort to do filming on the resort.

"Certainly we will be back on the events like the Hobie Cat challenge and will also have schoolies coming in so it takes over the calendar events we have.

"With all that is happening, we are planning on actually restructuring our accommodation, upgrading, and it is the same with the food and beverage area."

Mr Wong said the integration of live cooking stations was one of the areas they were working on.
