THE $10 million investment project by the Damodar Group of Companies for the Northern Division is expected to start soon, says chief executive officer Div Damodar.

Mr Damodar said they were on track with the Damodar City Labasa project and were in the process of awarding the contract for the project to a contractor.

He said it was going to be a massive development project for Vanua Levu, especially creating huge economic opportunities for the entire division.

According to Mr Damodar, they were in talks with tenants to purchase space for their businesses which would in turn create jobs for the people in Labasa.

"Small and medium enterprise business opportunity is out there and Labasa is focused on developing this sector and its going to be a great thing for Labasa's business sector.

"We believe that this is a start of a lot of other developments that would be taking place."

The initial announcement of the project had revealed that Damodar City Labasa would have two or three cinemas, two supermarkets, two large department stores, a food court, at least 20 retail shops, offices, museum, a warehouse, family fun centre, car and machinery showroom and a car park for 500 vehicles.

This project is expected to create jobs for 70 to 100 people during construction and more than 250 people would be employed after the opening of the centre.

Meanwhile on its Raiwaqa development project Mr Damodar said they were in architectural and design stages.

However Mr Damodar said because of the large scale of the development project it would take some time for them to start the actual construction work.
