THE new Namaka Municipal Market extension will have eco-friendly features once it's completed. A first of its kind for any municipal market accommodation centre in the country.

While commissioning the construction work for the $4.79 million facility in Nadi on Wednesday, Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment Parveen Kumar said the new market would adopt a rainwater harvesting system to supply water for the vendors.

"The new Namaka market facility will introduce a rain water harvesting system with a capacity to store up to 2000 litres of rainwater," Mr Kumar said.

He said other environmentally friendly features for electricity and rubbish disposal would also be installed.

"The market will utilise solar energy for partial supply of energy.

He said the 3R program reduce, reuse and recycle would also be implemented.

"This project is yet another landmark showcasing our leadership and support to the adaptation and mitigating effects of climate change."

Namaka vendors association president Alipate Bilavucu said the facility would provide major relief for the vendors.

"It's going to make our work a lot easier and we have a lot more space to sell our produce," he said.

"Vendors from outside of Nadi and those who travelled from afar will be able to stay in a safe and comfortable place."
