Suva marks national climate week

Monday, September 25, 2017

Update: 1:09PM FIJI'S government and non-government organisations convened at the Sukuna Park in Suva to mark the third day of the National Climate Week.

The day was dedicated to forestry, environment, and education through exhibitions, tree planting, clean-up campaigns, recycling activities, climate change seminars, oratory competitions, art competitions and storytelling in schools.

Speaking at the event, permanent secretary for the Ministry of Forestry Samuela Lagataki emphasised on the importance of forests and its recognition to the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.

Mr Lagataki reminded the members of the public of the major roles of forests in reducing the impacts of climate change.

"Forests produce woody biomass, which is an alternative to fossil fuel for the production of energy and it has the potential of absorbing 10 per cent of the total global carbon emissions projected for the next 50 years," he said.
