RSIPF committed to implement family protection

Thursday, September 14, 2017

Update: 12:57PM THE Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) has been and continues to be committed to the implementation of the Family Protection Act (FPA) to protect the survivors of gender-based and family violence (FV) in the Solomons.

"Since the gazetting of the FPA in 2016, RSIPF through its National Community Policing Unit has continued to advocate for the rights of our vulnerable members of the community, which the Act protects through community outreach meetings in all of the country's provinces," says Assistant Commissioner National Capital and Crime Prevention Gwen Ratu.

"Despite being only one of the stakeholders in this campaign against family violence, the RSIPF has integrated the implementation of the FPA within most, if not all, of its policing policies or strategies, including the roll-out of the Crime Prevention Strategy," AC Ratu said.

"RSIPF will continue to review and improve all its practices in relation to this crime type.

"To show its commitment, RSIPF is strengthening current mechanisms within the Force to advocate and deal with the reported cases of gender-based violence. On this note, RSIPF welcomes the assistance from the bilateral Solomon Islands Police Development Program (SIPDP) with the Australian Federal Police and the Solomon Islands Police Support Program (SIPSP) with the New Zealand Police in this area."

AC Gwen Ratu said the Force called on all stakeholders and donor partners to continue to strive for better coordination of the work that each one does to protect the vulnerable members of the communities, including women and children.
