Special envoy

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Ambassador Peter Thomson of Fiji as his special envoy for the Ocean, aiming at galvanising concerted efforts to follow up on the outcomes of the United Nations Ocean Conference in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, maintaining the momentum for action to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.

Temaru wary

FORMER president of French Polynesia and leader of the pro independence movement, Oscar Temaru, was a surprise observer at the 48th Pacific Islands Forum summit in Apia last week. The veteran campaigner said he was concerned at French government intentions to again remove his country off the UN Decolonisation Committee's list of non-self governing states.

Hospital visit

A TOTAL of 120 refugees have been brought to Port Moresby for medical treatment. It is claimed the men had been suffering from serious symptoms such as chronic stomach pain for more than three years and are yet to receive adequate treatment.
