Support for grassroots community

THE Government of India has presented an additional $0.58 million to the Fijian Government as part of its commitment towards developing Fiji's micro, small to medium enterprise (MSME) sector.

This in addition to the $US5m ($F10m) pledged by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his state visit to Fiji earlier in November 2014.

Made possible through a signed memorandum of agreement (MOA) between the Government of India and the Fijian Government, it has so far facilitated the release of $4.085m towards Fiji's MSME sector.

The additional $0.58m was presented earlier this week to the Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism, Lands and Mineral Resources Faiyaz Koya by the Indian High Commissioner to Fiji Vishwas Sapkal.

"On behalf of the Fijian Government, we thank the Indian Government for its continued support towards our grassroots community and assisting in formalising Fiji's MSME sector," Mr Koya said in a Government statement issued yesterday.

And with the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two governments over the years, the Government statement said the Indian Government had recognised the impact of such assistance on the lives of ordinary Fijians.

It also stated that the Indian Government has offered its continued support with a second MOA expected to be signed later in November during the Indian Minister for External Affairs visit to Fiji.

This second tranche of assistance will commence later in the year where the commitment made by the Prime Minister Modi will be realised in full.

The total financial support by the Government of India towards the development of the Fijian MSME sector is about $4.7m.
