Chess championship to select Fiji team

Wednesday, September 13, 2017

Update: 8:42PM THE 29th Brijlal Open Chess Championship this month will be used as an event to finalise selection for the Fiji team to compete in the Oceania Teams Championship in Brisbane, Australia in December.

Fiji Chess Federation acting president Kiran Khatri said the championship was the longest-running chess tournament in Fiji and they expected a large turn-out.

"We expect a huge turn-out, and the trend in recent years has seen a lot of school children taking part and doing well in our events," Khatri said.

"Since this is a premier chess event, it will be used as a selection tournament for the Fiji national team."

Khatri said sponsor Brijlal & Co had reaffirmed its commitment to the event, and $1000 had been added to the prize pool in addition to a large selection of electrical items and chess equipment.

He said the tournament was a FIDE-rated event, and the prize categories would be for open grade, junior (U20s) and women's.

The event will take place on September 24 at the Khatri Hall located at Suva's Desvoux Rd, from 8:30am to 3:30pm.

The entry fee for Under 20 players is $5, and others pay an entry fee of $10.
