Nutrition security and food policy discussed

Vishaal Kumar
Wednesday, September 13, 2017

National Food and Nutrition Centre manager Ateca Kama says the implementation of Fiji's Policy Framework for Food & Nutrition Security from 2018-2022 faces challenges because it will require the commitment of different ministries and a budget allocation.

Ms Kama made these comments while speaking at the Fiji Policy Framework for Food and Nutrition Security Validation Workshop in Suva on Monday.

Apart from these, Ms Kama said, monitoring the evaluation of the framework and the impact it would have on the communities was also a factor.

"For the past few weeks, the technical working group comprising of people from the Ministry of Agriculture, and Health have been working on a policy and the framework for Food and Nutrition Security," she said.

"These are two separate documents, the framework and the policy. We have consulted with Government and the members of the private sector in the Northern and Western divisions.

"We had one with the private sector and the academic institutions last week."

Ms Kama said there were nine policies altogether, with each of the policy areas being allocated to each of the ministries.

"We have some recommendations and most importantly, the commitments made by the ministries," she said.

She said the policy would be Government's policy on nutrition and food security in the country and would be co-ordinated by the centre, with the actual implementation being championed by the various ministries.

"The funding will also be from the Government, which will be spread amongst the different ministries.

"Each ministry will then allocate their own individual budget from their annual budget to support whatever policy areas are applicable to them," Ms Kama said.
