THE Fiji Rugby Union marked the first anniversary of the Olympic Games 7s gold medal win at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva on Friday night.

The event described as the "The greatest night in Fiji rugby history dinner" was attended by the gold medal winning team members such as Osea Kolinisau, magician Jerry Tuwai, Viliame Mata, Vatemo Ravouvou, former Fiji 7s manager Ropate Kauvesi, Jasa Veremalua, Samisoni Viriviri and physio William Koong.

Former Fiji 7s coach Ben Ryan also shared some moments of the win after a year on a recorded video played at the event.

"It has been a year since the Olympic Games win and it feels like it was yesterday, but sometimes it feels like a lifetime ago. So much stuff has happened since then and it is time to celebrate and hold a Fiji Gold and celebrate what a glorious year it was for Fiji rugby," he said.

"You can be the best coach in the world, but if you don't have players behind you and if you don't feel that you believe and trust them, then it has no purpose then you are nowhere near to achieving what you want to do and I had that, a team behind me.

"The Fijian public demands for success and they look at the selection and look at every game and me incredibly grateful they understood the journey that we were on.

"I was transparent and the team was transparent and we were available and that made a big difference."

Prime Minister and FRU president, Voreqe Bainimarama said Fiji 7s rugby was a dominant force on the international stage.

"It is a wonderful occasion tonight to relive our memories of the gold medal victory exactly 12 months ago," he said.

"We all remember the joy and happiness that victory brought to our nation, and the pride we felt when our 7s boys were crowned Olympic champions.

"Their sacrifices, commitment, hard work, discipline, and skill was rightfully rewarded, and it's good to have six of the team here with us tonight to share in celebrating that magnificent moment."

FRU chief executive officer, John O'Connor also raised a toast to the 7s team with the fans with the Fiji Gold beer while the guests also received a Reserve Bank of Fiji commemorative $7 note package.

Meanwhile, Carpenters Motors also handed over the keys to a new Hyundai mini-van which will be used to move 7s players and other FRU teams around the country.
