Strength in his family

Team Fiji chef de mission to the 2017 Commonwealth Youth Games Tomasi Tiko grew up on a farm with three sisters. The siblings had the luxury of spending most weekends and school breaks having fun to their hearts' content on the farm.

"Growing up in the bush meant that we were never short of finding something adventurous to do which is the pleasant side of life for me," said Tom, as he is commonly known.

Tom attended Suva Grammar and Queen Victoria schools for his secondary education and later enrolled into the then Fiji Institute of Technology under the management and real estate program.

"My dad worked in the construction industry and mum established a liking for plants and flowers, that is how I got into landscaping and real estate, by combining the two," said Tom

For Tom, his father and mother were the role models in his life who taught him the importance of life and family.

"My dad taught me the value of hard work and never to give an excuse for not achieving anything in life.

"My mum on the other hand taught me resilience and humility, how she tolerated things in life," said Tom

The husband and father of two desires to make a difference and excel in his calling and in order for Tom to do so, he draws his inspiration from his family.

"Family is everything, it's the most immediate support structure that allows you to journey and endure through life and helps bring perspective to life," said Tom

Tom has no regrets on the decisions he made because according to him it is the valuable lessons he learnt along the way that have sharpened and strengthened him as a person.

That being the case, it does not mean he does not face challenges.

"Balancing family, ministry, and work and sports commitments is a challenge that will always be there but having an open communication channel with my wife and lately a men's weekly gathering helps with understanding priorities in life and talking through issues."

Tom loves attempting new experiences and building something from the beginning with his hands, going on adventures, studying the Bible and playing sports.

A life well spent, he said, meant: "To honour God by functioning in my calling through my gifts and talent; to cherish my family by loving my wife and inspiring my kids to excel in their God-given gifts and to impact those around me to become better people."
