Learn from scientists

NATURE enthusiasts can go through an exciting journey in learning about Fiji's endemic and endangered species through the monthly NatureFiji-MareqetiViti Learn from the Scientists program.

Participants every month get a chance to be part of informative excursions that teach them about endemic species and their habitats from local and visiting scientists.

An activity most popular with young participants is the hunting for critters along the Nabukavesi stream activity with Bindiya Rashni, Fiji's very own macro-invertebrate specialist. In her passion for Fiji's rivers and its inhabitants, Ms Rashni has designed a habitat-organism game which introduced these young participants and their parents and guardians to little architects of Fiji's streams their micro-habitats. Through Ms Rashni's "Traffic light indicator" with Live and Learn, the participants are able to assess whether a stream is healthy or not. Participants got a chance to witness juvenile stages of damselfish, dragonflies, caddisflies, mayflies, moths and many more. These animals have ecological importance and serve as bio-indicators for a healthy stream.

NatureFiji-MareqetiViti designed the Learn from the Scientists program to generate local enthusiasm for Fiji's wildlife and for more local interest in the field of biology and ecology. We hope that in exposing children and their parents to the scientists, their passion and the wonderful world of the organisms that they study, we will have more local scientists leading the research and conservation action in Fiji. The group will be in the mangroves in the month of August.
