Roadside bomb

CAIRO - An Egyptian policeman was killed and four wounded by a roadside explosive near the Cairo suburb of Maadi on Sunday, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. "At around 12.45am on June 18 as a vehicle belonging to the Central Security Forces transported a group of officers and conscripts an improvised explosive device planted on the roadside went off," the ministry said.

Blast kills cop

DUBAI - A blast in the home village of a Shi'ite Muslim spiritual leader in Bahrain has killed a member of the security services and wounded two others, Bahrain's Interior Ministry said on its Twitter account on Sunday, blaming "terrorists". There were no more immediate details on the blast in Diraz Village, which is home to Ayatollah Isa Qassim.

6 killed in attack

GARDEZ, Afghanistan - Six police were killed and dozens of people wounded when as many as six gunmen and a suicide bomber attacked a police headquarters in eastern Afghanistan on Sunday morning, officials said. It took Afghan security forces most of the day to kill the last gunmen.

Energy crisis

GAZA - Hamas played down on Sunday the possibility that the energy crisis in the Gaza Strip would lead to renewed hostilities with Israel and said relations between the Islamist group and Egypt were improving. "We in Hamas do not initiate wars and we do not expect one, this is our political assessment," Khalil al-Hayya, Hamas's deputy leader said.

Strikes kills 25

DUBAI - About 25 Yemenis were killed when Saudi-led coalition aircraft struck a market in the northern Saada province, a local health official said on Sunday, the latest in a string of deadly incidents in the 27-month-old conflict. Officials from the Saudi-led coalition could not immediately be reached for a comment on the report.

Naval drill

BEIRUT - Iran and China began a joint naval exercise in the Gulf on Sunday, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported. The military drill comes at a time of heightened tension between the Iranian and US military in the Gulf and is likely to be a cause of concern for Washington.

Spy case

DUBAI - Kuwait's highest court on Sunday overturned the death sentence imposed by a lower tribunal against a man convicted of belonging to a group Kuwait said was trying to destabilise the Gulf Arab state on behalf of Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah. Iran has denied any links to the alleged cell.

Qatar rift

DUBAI - Kuwait's ruler called on Sunday for Gulf Arab states to overcome a diplomatic dispute with Qatar that has led to the worst regional split in years, saying all parties had a duty to preserve regional unity. Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who is leading mediation efforts after Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain severed ties with Qatar two weeks ago.
