Tamanisau shows class in FACT semi-final

EXPERIENCED goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau showed class and determination when he helped Rewa quality for the final after beating Labasa 6-5 in a penalty shoot-out at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori on Saturday.

It was the battle of the goalkeepers where Tamanisau saved Labasa's Antonio Tuivuna, Edwin Shayam, Akeimi Ralulu and Ilisoni Lolaivalu's goal attempts while Mateisuva stopped Lorima Dau, Iosefo Verevou and Tevita Waranivalu's powerful shots.

Both goalkeepers made some daring saves during the kicks, but it was Tamanisau, who saved Lolaivalu's shot, that allowed Rewa utility Madhvan Goundar an opportunity to kick the winning penalty and take Rewa into the final against Nadi.

"I thank the Lord for the victory against Labasa," Tamanisau said after the win.

"Everyone played their part in the team and I did my part as a goalkeeper and we should have finished the match in the second half, but we failed to score goals."

Tamanisau, 35, dived in the wrong direction when Tuivuna and Shayam took their turn, but he used his leg to deny Labasa two goals.

"We went to sleep when Labasa equalised in injury time and they utilised the opportunities they were provided with and managed to score," he added.

"Penalty kick is anyone's game since it is a mind game.

"It was all the blessings from the Almighty for giving me the strength to stand stall and stop those penalty kicks," the veteran goalkeeper said.

Nadi beat Suva 6-2 in the other semi-final.
