Rabbitohs rule Nadi premier grade

Monday, June 19, 2017

RAVORAVO Rabbitohs cemented its spot as a force to reckon with this season beating Nadi Eels 18-12 to win the premier grade and the Jo Levula trophy.

Led by inspirational captain Josateki Sovau, the side fought back strongly in the second spell to score two quick tries after being down 12-8 in the last quarter of the game.

Sovau powered his way to the try line to level the scoreline before former Vodafone Fiji Bati rep Tikiko Noke sealed the game with a try in the corner.

Inspired by the success of the senior reserve side against Sabeto Roosters earlier in the day and followed it up with cheer from their vocal supporters, the Rabbitohs proved strongly for the Eels.

Rabbitohs opened the floodgates early in the game when they finished off a wonderfully set piece that resulted in their first points of the game. Nippy playmaker Timoci Namotukula added the extras with the conversion.

This first try was a wake-up call to the Eels as they put their act together and turned the tables against their opponent to score two first half tries.

Both tries were scored by winger Saki Davetawaqa to help his team lead 8-6 at the break.

Namotukula levelled the scores in the second spell with a penalty before Eels winger James Daleniliga completed a well-worked move that started from a scrum.

Rabbitohs came back firing at the restart unleashing big hits that pressured their opponent.

Former Lautoka Crushers rep Noke played a grand game for the Rabbitohs making big runs that inspired the side to bounce back.

Skipper Sovau said the boys gave their all to win their first Nadi title and thanked the players and their families for the team work.

He said even though the side committed few mistakes he was satisfied with their performance.

"Nadi Eels gave us a really tough game," said Sovau.

"They played a structured game plan, but I thank our boys for their effort. We also thank our families for the support."

Meanwhile, in other grades, finals, Blues Western Dolphins defeated Western Storms in the under-16 final 20-4 while the Western Storms downed Sabeto Roosters 14-8 in the U18 final.

The Rabbitohs defeated neighbour Sabeto Roosters 18-6 in the reserve grade final while their premier side downed the Eels in the final.
