Ram maintains form in golf

Neelkash Ram has been playing golf for the past 21 years and absolutely loves the sport.

"It started when I was caddying around for my uncle and dad while they played. After they would finish and sit around relaxing and drinking, I would go and chip and putt," Ram said.

Ram is a well-known local name in the sport of golf. He returned home with a gold medal after competing at the South Pacific Mini Games, which was hosted on Norfolk Island.

"I was only 15 when I won the gold medal. Winning the medal was unbelievable. It did not sink in at first when I won until the Fiji national anthem played and tears were pouring down my face," Ram shared.

After winning the gold medal, Ram was offered a scholarship to study in New Zealand at Rotorua Boys High School. However, this did not stop Ram from returning to Fiji to defend his title at the open amateur division. On June 18, 2004, The Fiji Times published an article about Ram's focus on defending his Fiji open title in golf.

He has defended this title for three consecutive years and always made sure he returned home to play and have fun.

He was given the Professional's Card by the National Golf Association of Fiji in 2008 after playing for many years as an amateur golfer.

"I was always motivated by my family to play and represent Fiji and seeing my family happy was the greatest inspiration to keeping moving up the ladder in my golf career," Ram said.

Ram is working at Freight Forward Company as the operations manager but finds time to play at the Grange Golf Club.

"I thank God for everything He has given me so far — my golf and professional careers, and also my two sons and loving wife. Without Him, this good life would not have been possible," Ram said.
