Local SMEs gain from trade facilitation workshop

THE need to have a good understanding of your customers and having personal and social networks, including being flexible, are just some of the attributes of a successful export company.

This was discussed at the 2017 Fiji Path to Market workshop in Suva, where a good mix of more than 40 Fijian exporters and potential exporters were present.

The workshop, organised by Pacific Trade & Invest (PTI) and Fiji Export Council, was a chance for the local small to medium enterprises (SMEs) to gauge a good understanding of the attributes of a successful export company and successful export products.

This included the essentials of being export market ready and the power of packaging.

PTI trade commissioner Michael Greenslade said the workshop was also aimed at boosting those local SMEs which were not export ready.

"Most of the people here may not be export ready and that's absolutely fine by us," he said.

"These sort of forums that we run throughout the Pacific is getting the local private sector companies together to talk about important attributes that are key factors to their success.

"We talked about what a world-class exporter look like, what a world-class product look like and what your customer looks like."

The P2M workshop, now in its fourth year, is PTI's export capability building program that combines the range of export facilitation services and expertise provided by PT&I to help export ready and export capable businesses enter new export markets.

The content of the workshops was specifically targeted at existing and new exporters, giving further insights and overviews of getting products to market.

Fiji Export Council chief executive officer Jone Cavubati said they were grateful for the collaboration. "For Fiji, it's important that we work with strategic organisations that are based in our trading countries," he said.
