Tevita chases Fiji 7s rugby dream

MARK this name Anare Tevita

His Taveuni fans likend him to South Africa's Rosco Specman' because of his trademark dreadlocks —— complimented by his all-round rugby 7s talent that enabled him to win the Nawaka 7s best player award.

The 20-year-old was impressive during the two days of competition and scored two individual tries in the final to help his side down Uluinakau 15-0.

He has all the qualities needed by any 7s coach —— pace to burn, rock solid defensive player, skilful and one of the fittest players during the Nawaka 7s. He was all over the field of play during Taveuni's games and a disciplined player.

His first try in the final started from a mistake by Uluinakau. Tevita picked up a loose ball inside the 40m line and raced away untouched.

Tevita's second try was classic —— one of the best individual tries of the Nawaka 7s. It started from a kick off. Taveuni started the second spell with a kick off and Tevita showed his class and pace when he beat his opponent in the aerial contest collecting the ball in the air and raced away 38 metres to score.

The dreadlocked player who has quit studies and work to concentrate on rugby would be a perfect addition in the national 7s team.

Tevita said his dream was to don the national 7s jumper and had been working hard to prove his worth to the Fiji 7s management team.

"I have quit studies and work for the love of rugby," he said.

"I have been playing 7s for the past few years and just recently I have put my mind and soul in the sport because I am really in love with the game.

"I will keep on working hard to fulfil my aim of representing the Fiji 7s team but if the door closes on me I will look for overseas contract."

When asked of his trademark dreadlocks - this was his response: some fans especially from back home used to call me 'Specman' because of my dreads and also my type of game' so I always try and live up to that expectation," he added.
