Geospatial info vital

IT is important to have a thorough understanding of all the dynamics when considering climate change adaptation measures or designing new infrastructure developments in the region.

Pacific Community's (SPC) Geoscience Division director Professor Michael Petterson made the comments while opening the third meeting of the Pacific Geospatial and Surveyors Council (PGSC) in Suva on Thursday.

Prof Petterson said it was important for countries in the region to have access to these services in terms of climate change issues affecting them.

"Geospatial information underpins majority of economic and sustainable development activities in the world today and the Pacific islands are no exception," he said.

"It is of enormous importance to the regional countries especially bearing in mind the relationship between rising sea levels and islands that may rise or subside because of geo-tectonic forces."

Australian High Commission's first secretary Raymond Bojczuk said the Australian Government was committed to providing support and funding to the PSGC.

"We have been a proud supporter of the PGSC since the first meeting in November 2014," he said.

"Through the project we have provided equipment and training to lands and survey departments around the region."

The workshop was facilitated by representatives from Geoscience Australia, the United Nations Initiative on Global Geospatial Information Management (UNGGIM), the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG), Land Information New Zealand and the Pacific Community's Geoscience Division.

Current PGSC members include the Cook Islands, Fiji, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
