Framing stage for biomass plant

THE framing stage for the 12 megawatt biomass plant in Nabou, Sigatoka was completed last week.

According to the developers of the $US45 million ($F92m) facility, the plant is at 75 per cent completion.

Joint venture company Nabou Green Energy Ltd (NGEL) CEO Lee Jun Hyung said the business arrangement for the 12MW biomass project would focus on producing power to satisfy the power purchase agreement requirements with the Fiji Electricity Authority.

"While other ventures are being explored for future, there are no plans of exporting biomass chips to the global market at present," he said.

"Each JV partner brings a specialised skill to this project. A biomass plant is highly specialised for construction and the ongoing operation and maintenance," said Mr Lee.

"The power plant will be highly automated. During operations, three to five people can operate the plant. For the past 18 months a large number of landowners have been involved in the planting and construction process. Short rotation crops are planted that mature in two-and-a-half-years and the planting process will continue after construction."

"The project will cost $US45 million and the entire funding has been brought from offshore.

"Despite unforeseen challenges such as Severe TC Winston and heavy rain, the construction is on schedule."

The commercial operations date is scheduled for April 2017.

The plant is a joint venture between GIMCO (Korean biomass company), GS Power (Korean energy company) and Mirae Asset (a Korean project financing and investment company) and Tropik Wood Industries Ltd.

Tropik is a 25 per cent local shareholder.
